Polar Ice House in Grapevine will celebrate the 15 years of great memories and experiences this facility has created for many many families in our community. Polar Ice has impacted so many people and to show our appreciation we would like to have a fun filled FREE DAY on Saturday, September 6 from 12pm - 4pm. Bounce House, Snow Cones, Hot Dogs, Popcorn, Ice Skating, Hockey and much much more will all be free to our friends and community. Come one, Come all! Let’s close down Polar Ice with Hugs, Smiles, Awesome Memories, and Amazing Experience's and of course a few tears. We are a family; let’s celebrate our final family "Reunion".
To the Polar Ice House Community:
It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of our recent decision to close the Polar Ice House in Grapevine effective September 6, 2014.
As some of you are aware, we filed a lawsuit earlier this year against the Dallas Stars and others, asserting claims arising under Texas anti-trust and unfair competition statutes. That lawsuit is going forward, and we remain confident that justice will ultimately be served. Unfortunately, however, the harm we were trying to protect ourselves and our customers from by filing the lawsuit has already been done. Given the economic damages we have suffered to date, we have been left with no choice but to shut down our rink.
I am saddened both personally and professionally by this situation. I am going to miss my friends and extended family in the Polar Ice House community. Most importantly, I feel badly for the young kids who will no longer be able to pursue figure skating and hockey in the rink they grew up in. Despite the hardship that it will cause many to move away from their home facility, I hope that all of these children will continue to pursue their passion for ice sports. I am terribly upset at the thought that many may have to quit the sport that they have grown to love as a result of having their rink taken away from them by the actions of third parties.
The Dallas Stars initially entered the ice rink facilities business with the stated purpose of helping expand hockey and skating in the Metroplex area and creating players who would become future fans of their professional team. However, they seem to have lost sight of their initial vision, and we believe that they are now using their market position in a way that is unfair and harmful to youth hockey in North Texas. We feel the environment the Dallas Stars have created has led to fewer youth hockey organizations, the closing and/or scaling back of operations of independent, competitive facilities, and a significant decline in registered youth hockey players in the state of Texas.
Regardless, I want to thank you all for providing me the opportunity to serve as your General Manager for the past 5 years. We are proud of all that we accomplished together in Grapevine during that time, including building one of the largest learn-to-skate and learn-to-play hockey programs in Texas. We worked tirelessly to market our facility to attract neophyte skaters, provide the highest standard of customer service, and teach young children all of the great values and life lessons associated with hockey and figure skating.
I will be planning a farewell skating party on Saturday September 6, 2014. Please check back for details.
Thank you all very much for all of your support throughout the years.
