To the Grapevine Ice House Community:

The lawsuit recently filed by Grapevine Ice House against the Dallas Stars, the Dallas Stars Travel Hockey League, and Dallas Stars president Jim Lites, as well as other individuals associated with the Dallas Stars and their affiliated ice rinks in North Texas, is intended to insure that hockey players and their parents who have in the past been a part of high level, USA Hockey-sanctioned instruction and play at Grapevine Ice House do not lose that ability due to the actions of third parties who may stand to benefit financially by unfair competition and manipulation of the youth hockey system. The crux of the claims asserted by Grapevine Ice House against the Dallas Stars and the other defendants in the case concerns violations of the Texas Free Enterprise and Antitrust Act of 1983, which prohibits monopolies in any market in Texas, as well as conspiracies in restraint of trade.  In short, Grapevine Ice House is asking the court simply to enforce Texas law that requires a free market and an even playing field for everyone.

Though the actions complained of in the lawsuit have have been ongoing over a period of several years, the immediate catalyst for Grapevine Ice House's request for a temporary injunction was the recent decision by the Dallas Stars Travel Hockey League to dictate that Grapevine Ice House, regardless of the level of talent playing in its building, would not be allowed to put forward "AA" level teams in the coming season.  Teams playing at ice rinks affiliated with the Dallas Stars, however, will be allowed to ice "AA" level teams, per the declaration of the league.  Grapevine Ice House believes that the players who have chosen to skate at our facility over the last several years have been second to none in terms of overall talent and skill, and we feel strongly that the players skating on our ice should not be prospectively downgraded by the league before teams are even assembled.

Litigation was not Grapevine Ice House's preferred course, but we felt strongly that the actions of defendants left us with no other adequate remedy.  And because it is Grapevine Ice House's contention in our suit that the actions taken against Grapevine Ice House and our players, families, and coaches violate Texas law against monopolies and conspiracies in restraint of trade, we asked the court to enter a temporary retraining order maintaining the status quo--in particular Grapevine Ice House's right to ice "AA" level hockey teams--  until a full hearing could be had on our request for a temporary injunction.  On April 17th, the court, finding that "harm is ongoing and additional harm is imminent as a result of Defendants’ actions, and that if the Court does not issue an order restraining the conduct of Defendants described herein below, Plaintiff’s business will be irreparably injured," issued the restraining order against all defendants in the case, including entities associated with the Dallas Stars, as well as Dallas Stars president Jim Lites.

The owners, employees, and coaches of Grapevine Ice House believe strongly in the promotion of quality youth hockey in Texas, and we have worked diligently for many years in the service of that goal, and in the service of the players and families who have graced us with their patronage, their time, and their commitment.  As the legal process takes its course, Grapevine Ice House will stand by those players and families, and we will stand by our belief in a fair playing field and free market for all.  We are immensely grateful for the support of everyone in the Grapevine Ice House community.
